Search engine optimization (SEO) was once the gold standard for marketers. It helped the right people find the right content at the right time, drawing business straight to their doors.
However, answer engine optimization (AEO) has entered the chat. That’s because prospects are increasingly turning to AI-powered tools for information. But does that mean it’s time to shift your attention from SEO to AEO?
Not exactly. The strongest content strategies make plenty of room for both.
SEO and AEO Have Very Different Jobs
Traditional SEO largely revolves around finding ways to get your content as high up in search rankings as possible. That means understanding search intent, creating compelling content, incorporating keywords naturally, sending the right trust signals and making sure your website can be crawled and indexed properly.
AEO focuses on making information easy for AI-powered search and answer engines to understand, extract and reference when responding to a user’s question.
The distinction matters because the user experience is different.
A traditional search will give someone a list of links to explore. An AI-generated answer will synthesize information from multiple sources and provide citations for users who want to dig deeper. That changes what visibility can look like. Instead of only asking “Does our page rank?” businesses also need to ask “Can an answer engine understand what we’re saying well enough to use us as a source?”
Where SEO and AEO Overlap
Fortunately, you don’t need two entirely separate content strategies.
Both SEO and AEO benefit from original, authoritative content that directly addresses the questions your audience is asking. Clear organization, descriptive headings, trustworthy sourcing, internal links and demonstrated subject-matter expertise can help humans, traditional search engines and AI systems understand a page.
In fact, Google specifically says its SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative AI search features. It also emphasizes unique, useful content rather than generic information that just repeats what’s already available online.
That is especially important for financial services, legal, cybersecurity and other regulated industries.
Expertise is a major advantage. Content that explains complicated subjects clearly and accurately gives your organization something more valuable to contribute than another generic “five tips” article.
Where AEO Requires a Little More
AEO does change how you need to think about presenting that expertise.
AI systems need to be able to quickly identify what a page is about and locate useful passages within it. That makes clear question-based headings, concise answers, definitions, FAQs and logically structured sections extra valuable. Supporting important claims with credible sources also gives your content stronger context and makes it easier to verify.
There’s a technical side, too. Structured data, or schema markup, can help search engines understand information on a page and may make content eligible for enhanced search features. (Just don’t think of schema as a magic “get cited by AI” button. Google explicitly says there is no special schema required for inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode.)
Finally, don’t overlook site performance. Fast-loading, mobile-friendly pages create a better experience for human visitors and make a stronger technical foundation for search visibility. Google recommends good Core Web Vitals, which measure loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability.
In other words, AEO doesn’t replace solid technical SEO. It gives businesses another reason to get it right.
Build One Single Strategy
The goal shouldn’t be to create “SEO content” and “AEO content” in separate silos. Start with the questions your customers and prospects genuinely need answered. Create authoritative, original content around those questions. Structure it so the answers are easy to identify and support it with sound technical SEO, structured data, strong internal linking and a fast, accessible website.
Search behavior will continue to evolve. Your content strategy needs to evolve with it.
