Almost 75 million websites (nope, that number is not a typo!) use WordPress, and half of them pay exactly zero dollars to do it.
But what is WordPress, how does it work and how can it help you succeed? Here’s the “word” on using WordPress for your small business.
What Is WordPress?
WordPress is an open-source content management system (CMS). With it, you can create any type of website, from the simplest one-pager to a full-fledged small business site with all the bells and whistles.
It’s simple enough that even code-challenged small business owners can set up a professional looking website utilizing the thousands site design templates (also known as themes). You don’t need to know a thing about HTML.
.Com or .Org?
There are two variations of WordPress. WordPress.com is a hosted site. Best for beginners and those who need a free WordPress option, the .com version limits you to the preprogrammed, built-in themes and doesn’t allow plug-ins. However, this is a great starting point, and it’s easy to move your website to the .org version whenever you’re ready.
WordPress.org is the self-hosted site. Mainly for advanced users and those who prefer to run WordPress on their own web hosting account, this version allows for complete customization. Add your own plug-ins, write your own code and design to your heart’s desire.
WordPress.org does come with some costs attached, namely the hosting and domain name fees you’ll incur by taking your site off the free .com platform. However, for those who don’t want a cookie-cutter site and want to be in complete control of their site, .org is the way to go.
Do You Need WordPress?
In a word? Yes! The numbers don’t lie – WordPress is the most popular CMS, and the easiest to use. As a small business owner, your website is one of the best tools you have in your arsenal, and WordPress makes it simple to make that website absolutely fantastic!
